  • Harvested more than 33,000 pounds of produce
  • Increased gardening and horticulture skills among staff and volunteers among those partner organizations through gardening workshops and on-site technical assistance

Overview

The Cultivating Communities Campaign (CCC) is a food access initiative that seeks to increase access to fresh, locally-grown produce for low-income individuals and families in the North Penn region of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. This is accomplished through a collaborative effort to build the local community’s capacity by developing and expanding edible gardens, and coordinating partnerships among community gardens, farms, and produce distribution sites that reach community members in need.

The CCC is a collaborative initiative led by Health Promotion Council, and conducted in partnership with three other core partners. These are: Montgomery County Health Department, Penn State Cooperative Extension – Montgomery County, and The Food Trust. Together, the four organizations form the CCC core partnership. CCC core partners work with more than 35 separate community organizations, schools, and local farmers across the region to harvest and distribute fresh produce for individuals and families in need.

In addition to creating community partnerships and increasing access to fresh produce, the CCC provides training and technical assistance on gardening for community partners, and nutrition education for individuals and families receiving fresh produce – particularly in the areas of preparing, cooking, and storing fresh produce – to support the development and maintenance of healthy choices.
