Sunny Summer Safety
Ever wonder what SPF means? Here's a quick run down!
It's time to play and be carefree. But this doesn't mean you should throw caution to the wind and forget about safety! Here are a few simple things to keep in mind as you enjoy this summer.
With the sunny days (and the occasional thunderstorm) comes some heat that can dehydrate you pretty quickly. Remember to consume at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you think that's just too much water, here are a few helpful hints on how to stay hydrated:
- fruits like watermelon are great hydrators
- carry a reusable water bottle with you or always have one at your desk to remind yourself to drink up!
- have at least two glasses of water at each meal
- weigh yourself before and after an intense workout and for every pound you lose (yes that's just water weight), drink at least half a liter of water
The heat and sun can also lead to some nasty sunburn so remember to apply a facial lotion with sunscreen and if you plan to be out for awhile, upgrade that to real sunscreen. To allow enough time for the sunscreen to soak in apply it 30 minutes prior to going out. You also want to make sure that it protects against bothUVB[SB1] (Ultraviolet B rays that cause sunburns and skin cancer) and UVA (Ulrtaviolet A rays that can cause wrinkling and aging and are also linked to skin cancer)rays and has an SPF of at least 30. It wears off so remember to reapply every 2 hoursand even sooner if you are in the water or sweating. It may seem like a hassle now but you'll be happy you reapplied when you're skin cancer free.
If you're looking for some summer exercise, riding a bike is a great habit to take up. Just remember to obey traffic laws and wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet can greatly reduce your chance of head injury if (and when) you crash. Just remember to wear it correctly and to pick a helmet for protection and not just fashion. Make sure yours passes one of the recognized helmet safety standards such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Americna Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM[SB1] ), or Snell.
Have a fun and safe summer!
