Health Promotion Council has been providing medical interpreter training to professional interpreters and bilingual staff at non-profit organizations beginning in 1998 in Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley. The course follows the model "Bridging the Gap" established by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) of Seattle, Washington under a licensed agreement. The 40-hour certification course covers the roles and responsibilities of the interpreter, the US health care system, anatomy and medical procedures, and cultural self- awareness.

Being from Coxsackie, NY- yes, this is a real place and yes, the hand, foot and mouth disease is our unique claim to fame in the medical world- I could not wait to set sail to the big city of Philadelphia. I was looking forward to the diversity, the culture, the arts, and, of course, the brotherly love! Well, while I found much of what I was looking for. I also found some things I wasn't looking for: poverty, neighborhood blight, food deserts, a fast food chain on every other corner, and many communities suffering unfairly from chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cancer.
